- The responsibilities of the federal
and provincial governments were first defined in 1867, in the British
North America Act.
- The federal government usually
takes responsibility for matters that affect all of Canada. This includes
national defense, foreign policy and citizenship.
- Provincial and Territorial governments
look after education, health care and highways. They share responsibilities
with the federal government in some places.
- The municipal (local) governments
of each city or community are responsible for police, fire fighting,
snow removal and recycling programs.
