GOVERNMENT IN CANADA

There are three levels of government in Canada:

Federal

Provincial or Territorial

Municipal (or local)

  • The responsibilities of the federal and provincial governments were first defined in 1867, in the British North America Act.
  • The federal government usually takes responsibility for matters that affect all of Canada. This includes national defense, foreign policy and citizenship.
  • Provincial and Territorial governments look after education, health care and highways. They share responsibilities with the federal government in some places.
  • The municipal (local) governments of each city or community are responsible for police, fire fighting, snow removal and recycling programs.
