STRUCTURE OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
The Government of Canada is usually called the Federal Government.
It is made up of:

WHAT DOES THE GOVERNMENT DO?

collects taxes defends the country with the armed forces protects the environment provides communication prints money supplies unemployment insurance benefits and old age pensions maintains the mail system deals with overseas trade grants citizenship to immigrants etc.

THERE ARE
- 308 Members in the House of Commons (MP's) and 105 Senators in the Senate.
Members of Parliament are elected by Canadians every five years ( or less ) in order to carry out the nation's business.
When a new government is formed, the Prime Minister chooses some of the elected members to form a Cabinet.
The members of the Cabinet are called ministers and they are responsible for various government departments.
