1867

The British North America Act ( BNA Act) establishes Canada as a country.

  • Establishes CONFEDERATION
  • A federal system of government

Before this date, Canada was a group of colonies

CONFEDERATION

A federal or central government with a parliament and provincial government. There is a provincial legislature in each province.

The rights, responsibilities and powers are stated in the BNA Act.

Four Provinces join to become Canada

    Ontario
    Quebec
    Nova Scotia
    New Brunswick
1870
MANITOBA becomes the 5th province
1982
The Rights and Freedoms of Canadians are put into writing in the New Constitution Act.

 

NOTE

Canada's Parliament is modeled after the BRITISH. There are many democratic customs and traditions that Canada adopted from the British. However, the British have only a central government.
