THE VOTING PROCESS

 

VOTING AREAS ARE DIVIDED INTO:

 

  • CONSTITUENCIES
  • RIDINGS
  • ELECTORAL DIVISIONS

 

ENUMERATION

Every possible voter is recorded in each area. Their name is put on the VOTER'S LIST.

  • Enumerators come to your home and ask for the names of people over 18 years old and are Canadian citizens.
  • They give you a copy of the names that they write down.
  • All of the recorded voters are on the Voter's List for each area. *It is your responsibility to check to see if your name is on the list.
  • If your name is not on the list, you can phone Elections Canada Office to have your name put on it. The phone number will be in the newspaper or on TV.
  • In a Federal election a Notice of Enumeration is mailed to you. This card tells you that your name is on the Voter's List.
  • If you will be away on Election Day you can vote early. (Advance Voting)

 

ELECTION DAY

  • Go to your POLLING STATION on Election Day
  • Receive a ballot
  • The clerk will draw a line through your name, in the book
  • Put an "X" or a check in the circle
  • Remember it is a SECRET BALLOT
  • Put your ballot into the ballot box
  • The Polling Station closes
    • The ballots are counted
    • Listen to the radio, watch TV or read the newspaper for the results
