MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT

The information on this page is about Manitoba and Winnipeg.

I've included some links to other cities at the bottom of the page.

There are more than 525 municipalities in Manitoba.

Depending on its size, a municipality is called:

                • a city (large)
                • a town (medium)
                • a village (small)

Sometimes it is easier to provide services to a large area, than to just one municipality. For this reason, most municipalities in rural areas are grouped together

Municipal government is also called local government. It is responsible for many things that affect the local community e.g. garbage, fire, police, roads and recycling programs.

The MUNICIPAL COUNCIL runs the MUNICIPAL GOVERNMENT. It makes decisions about services and how to spend the money from municipal taxes.

MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

  • Municipal elections are held every 4 years in Manitoba.
  • Each municipality elects its own municipal council.
